Session Description

Did you know that each year the United States Department of Education distributes over 90 million dollars in federal funding to State Education Agencies (SEAs) under Title I, Part D (TIPD), Subpart 2 to support Local Educational Agencies (LEAs) in improving educational services for some of the nation’s most at-risk youth? In addition to supporting educational services for students who are in local institutions for delinquent students, these funds can also be used to prevent at-risk youth from dropping out of school and to provide children and youth returning from correctional facilities with a support system to ensure their continued education.

In this session, participants learned the basics of the TIPD program with an emphasis on how they can use TIPD funding to support a drop-out prevention program within their LEA. We explored how to determine if your LEA is eligible to receive funding and what allowable expenses fall under TIPD. Additionally, we will provide examples of at-risk programming throughout the country and show how these programs can improve student outcomes, prevent students from dropping out, and assist students with transitioning back into the public school environment when they return from a correctional institution.

This presentation was conducted by The National Training and Technical Assistance Center for the Education of Children and Youth who are Neglected, Delinquent, or At-Risk (NDTAC) during the 34th Annual National Dropout Prevention Conference in New Orleans, LA.
