NDTAC Practice Guide: Quality Education Services Are Critical for Youth Involved With the Juvenile Justice and Child Welfare Systems

This practice guide is the fourth in a series of guides prepared as companion pieces to the white paper disseminated by the Center for Juvenile Justice Reform at Georgetown University, “Addressing the Unmet Educational Needs of Children and Youth in the Child Welfare and Juvenile Justice Systems” (2012). 

The guide examines the principle that quality education services are critical for youth who are system involved and also offers a range of practices and strategies that align with the “Guiding Principles for Providing High-Quality Education in Juvenile Justice Secure Care Settings” (2014), released jointly by the U.S. Departments of Education and Justice as part of their Correctional Education Guidance Package. These resources can provide assistance to juvenile justice, child welfare, and education professionals as they work to improve education programming and outcomes for youth in their care.
